We experience more than one type of learning. Classical and instrumental conditioning are two types of unconscious learning. Classical: allows us to associate two related events. Dogs would begin to salivate even before food reached their mouth. The sound of a metronome signaled to a dog that food was about to be delivered. Before training, the sound of the metronome had no observable effect on the dog"s behaviour. Following training, the dogs would begin to salivate at the sound of the metronome alone -- Contingencies: when one stimulus reliably predicts the presentation of another. When an organism learns an association btwn a signal and an event, we say that a contingent relationship has formed btwn the two stimuli. A contingency is formed when the conditional stimulus (cs) reliably predicts the unconditional stimulus (us) When a contingent relationship is learned, an organism can respond to the signal even before the event occurs; can promote survival.
