Understand patterns of thought, emotion, behaviour that are considered problematic. Understand current hypotheses about the causes of psychopathology: where it comes from, why do people develop these thoughts and feelings. Be aware of the challenges involved in investigating the causes of psychopathology. Appreciate our lack of understanding concerning the causes and treatment of psychopathology. Understand and appreciate the personal experience of psychopathology. Dsm disorder categories do not reflect the multiple and overlapping causes of multiple disorder: referred to as bible of psychology but is actually flawed. We do not know the causes of any disorders we will discuss, or any others in the dsm. We do not know why or how our pharmacological or psychotherapeutic treatments work. Ethical considerations prevent much research involving individuals with a particular disorder. Psychological symptoms of mental disorders cannot be duplicated or verified in non- human animals. Causes of mental disorder vary both between disorders, and from case to case within disorders.
