First edition of the diagnostic and statistical manual for mental disorders (dsm) Psychoanalysis was a prominent theme in psychiatry at this time, focusing on events in early childhood and subconscious, irrational drives. Concerns that the dsm-iii had low reliability due to lack of agreement between clinicians and that psychoanalytic approach was vague and unscientific. Solutions included no longer assessing symptoms by situational context, developing checklists and making situational context part of the checklists.
