Experiment: scientific tool used to measure the effect of one variable on another: scientist manipulates the independent variable, scientist observes effect on dependent variable. 2 types: experimental group - gets manipulation of independent variable, control group - will not get manipulation of independent variable . Within-subjects design: manipulates the independent variable within each participant to minimize the effect of external variables on the dependent measure, ensures similarity between experimental groups, tests same subject repeatedly, minimizes different on dependent measures. Problems with this design: time consuming / costly, participant may change.
