Document Summary

Psychology is challenged with solving ancient puzzles that impact everyone. Theme 1: some of the things you know to be true about psychology are wrong. Causes people to channel reasoning to something that has no scientific data. Cognitive dissonance (counterintuitive finding with profound implications): the state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs or attitudes. To resolve: either change beliefs or change your actions. Perspectives change the focus on research questions and answers we seek. Theme 3: psychological processes are embedded in biology. Everything (bias, thought processes, opinions) is coated in retroactivity in the brain. Theme 4: perception of the world is guided by prior experience biases and heuristics. Top down processes: how your previous experiences and biases can help you interpret data and influence problem solving (may lead you to hear what is not said) We bring into everything that we learn, our own individual experiences and it shapes our answers / informaiton.
