Locations in the brain that are more central or towards the midline of the brain are medial. Regions towards the the outside of the brain are lateral (at the side of the brain) Dorsal refers to back of axis and ventral refers to front of axis. Neuraxis has curve therefore at level of head dorsal is up but at the level of the spinal cord dorsal is back. Rostral is at the front of the brain. Special techniques exist for studying the structure and function of the brain. Brain injury links brain anatomy with behavioural deficits. Was seen as intelligent, full of life and likeable. Railway construction accident led to a 3-foot iron rod going through his skull. Gage survived and recovered completely however, his personality changed. Became selfish, erratic and unreliable, and had trouble forming and following through on plans. Lesion studies must be specific to target the function of a brain region.
