Observational research: case studies and field observational studies. Correlational research: ie. field o(cid:271)servatio(cid:374)al studies, ar(cid:272)hival studies, survey studies; (cid:272)hild"s reading/intellectual ability, parent teacher and peer reports, retrospective reports. Causation? (the action of causing something, or the relationship between cause and effect) Random assignment: uses causation, changes something to see the effect of it. Quasi experiment: in lab or in field; lacks random assignment on atleast one variable. Three main designs for studying age effect: cross sectional: good because it is quick and cheap, and it demonstrates age difference. Thus, is development continuous or discontinuous: longitudinal designs, pros: tells us about developmental course. Continuity/discontinuity and can reveal links between early experience and later outcomes. It eliminates some aspects of the cohort effect because the changes are development not cohort. Some cons: the cohort effect is still a problem, because of the amount of time it takes it also costs more money and time.
