Introspection is not scientific because we cannot validate claims. It is about understanding how we select information to attend to, we are bias towards information that is important to us: perceptual illusions are examples of how what we perceive is not what is real. Our perceptional systems have developed sensitivity to different stimuli in the environment: a lot of information is ambiguous, we must decide how to perceive it. History: cognition has a long history, there are many different perspectives. Today we know we cannot investigate contents of the mind. Introspection feel out of favor and was considered to be nonscientific. William james: he was a philosopher, he made observations about the human condition that are still valid, he influenced the development of psychology. It is always proportional to the original level of physical energy. Information in sensory memory is a literal representation. In order to retain information, we need to work on it.
