Family the coming together of 2 adults, usually but not always a man and a women, usually but not always legally married, to express their mutual love and commitment. If the relationship lasts, children are often produced, and then the family is made of mother, father, and children living together under one roof, developing a long-term economic, social, and emotional unit. Sometimes, as the years advance, the family expands to include aging grandparents. The establishment of the family is an effort to find assured meaning and solace, as well as to express our emotional selves in more fundamental and lasting ways. Freud suggested that, prior to civilization, humans lived in hordes that were characterized by a dominant male who enjoyed sexual access to all the females and denied sexual gratification to the younger, subordinate males.
