Primary divider of class is wealth; who owns the means of production- key variable of social class- individuals accumulate private property or their relationship to that property. In the past history: land= wealth- land owning elites- passed what they owned to their children. Peasantry- worked the land but did not own land. Capitalists- owned new means of production- factories, enterprises, and earned wealth. Labouring class- had no wealth so they could receive income only by selling their labour to the wealthy capitalists. Erik olin wright: adds a third category to the contemporary production: managers. Workers- labour under the power of the first two. Weber: social class- those who share the same life chances in the market place - based on wealth, but also education, occupation, and income. Wealth: accumulated property owned by a person or family. ( a person can high high income but low wealth. likewise, someone with low income might have inherited a lot of wealth)
