Gordian Knot of Race Class and Gender
Inequality
Income inequality leads to differences in economic opportunities and reduced peoples money
borrowing opportunities therefore reducing their opportunity to invest in human capital
Inequality encourages elitism
2 Canada’s : those who have and those who do not
Democratic action : everyone feeling they’re apart of the same boat, all in it together and belong
together + will solve problems collectively
Why Inequality Matters in 1,000 words or less? — Dec. 2007 CCPA
1. The rich can leave the boat
2. Public resources for addressing problems are diminished - this is an attack on the poor saying
them being poor is their own fault
3. Canadians become beggars - reduction in funds available - the wealth become the source for
charity because they can donate and theprdorities of the wealthy gets attention.
4. Inequalities fosters’ elitism and resentment
5. Gross inequalities are part of a culture of individualism - not working for public good but the
good of the few. As a nation, with increased inequality and polarization, we become much more
divided which has consequences on the countries values
6. Inequality is the end of democracy (Cunningham 2007) - labour market is changed. While Canada
has signed treaties on human rights, ex. Housing is a human right, but not everyone in Canada has a
house.
Is inequality a good thing? And do we need inequality in order for people to work harder?

Intersections of various social identities profoundly affect the lives of those who embody these
categories
1. No social group is homogenous - all people are different, no matter what group they belong to
+ people can identity to more than one group ex. gender and race discrimination, a woman of
colour, this person is apart of 2 groups that are discriminated, thus is intersectional
2. No social group is homogenous , People must be located in terms of their structures that
capture power relations implied by those structures.
3. There are unique, non-additive effects of identifying with more than one group (Stewart and
McDermott, 2004
