Not the best source of knowledge b/c we feel we need to listen to people in authority b/c of power dynamics. - stands up against scrutiny, able to be duplicated by others. Theory oriented; abstract, most wouldn"t identify w/ it; foundation for applied research. Takes what is theoretical and applies it to a real life problem. Impacts the topics chosen, how one does research, etc. What opportunities are available based on how popular a topic is at a certain time/ in a certain place. Inductive reasoning starts by observing something and is about building theories. Observation --> pattern --> tentative hypothesis --> theory. Each hypotheses will result in a different theory. The answers to the questions we ask become observations, which either confirms or disconfirms the theory disconfirms the theory. Where we start has an impact in how we approach the problem.
