The patriarchal family: (erickson: everyone is subservient to the father. If everyone is subservient to the father then the children are not able to develop mature self- esteem. Creates poor self-esteem: self-esteem is useful in making important life decisions and directing themselves in meaningful ways. Children cannot develop this when subservient to their father: they continue to be treated as children and are viewed as below their father. They are not encouraged to seek authority, even over their own lives. The egalitarian family: (erickson: both parents are equal partners, both the mother and father have power and share it, they are equal mentors for children. They are able to help their children understand that there are no gender differences between men and women: all children are encouraged to achieve. Both male and female children are encouraged to achieve all that they can and the parents are there to support their efforts: raising adults, not children.
