Blood does not have collagen and fibers typically found in other connective tissues. Buffy coat: a thin whitish layer, which contains leukocytes that protect the body, and also contains platelets that help stop bleeding. Blood is more dense than water and 5 times more viscous. Components of blood: plasma (55%, formed elements, erythrocytes (red blood cells or rbcs) (45%, leukocytes (white blood cells or wbcs)(1%, platelets (1%) Hematocrit: the ratio of the volume of red blood cells to the total volume of blood. Blood is a sticky,opaque fluid with a metallic taste. Color varies depending on the oxygen level in blood: scarlet (oxygen rich) to dark red (oxygen poor) Average volume : males 5-6 l and females 4-5 l. Plasma contains over 100 different solutes, including nutrients, gases, hormones, wastes and products of cell activity, proteins, and inorganic ions (electrolytes). ***most plasma proteins produced by the liver***
