Chapter 1 - human inquiry and science lecture. Focus of the text is about how we know things. Much of how we know is based on what we have heard from others in a social setting. Most of what we know is a matter of agreement and belief. We also know through direct experience and/or observation. In the occident, the question of what is real has been addressed since the time of the greek philosophers in 4th cent. Science - an approach to both agreement reality and experiential reality. Agreement reality: what we know as part of the culture we share. Experiential reality: what we know from personal experience. Along with agreement and experiential reality, a scientific assertion must have both logical and empirical support. The moon example - only see light on one side of moon, logic - sun doesn"t hit the dark side, empirical - stats, calculations, etc. Methodology: a subset of epistemology, the science of finding out.
