Document Summary

Development doesn"t only occur because of a successful performance. Learning is a process of trail and error, our efforts may not always be successful and we may discover that failure, as much or even more that success, can be the spur to advance. Discovering the source of an error or reaching a dead end is often important in the shift from one stage of development to another. Shifts in orientation are identified in kohlberg"s stages and levels of moral development: the realization of the shortcomings of always getting your own way can lead to the realization of the importance of group identity and rules. If all goes well, as we mature we learn to become less centred on our own interest: our self-interest expands to include the interests of others, the community, and the search for and discovery of genuine values.
