How living together before marriage has become a common thing in today"s society and how the studied couples do and undo gender . Cohabitation is often portrayed as something that strays away from the traditional family because it provides intimacy and shared economics with fewer expectations for specialization in traditional gender roles. So basically: people cohabitate because (unlike marriage) cohabitation doesn"t create gender roles (the women and men share responsibilities) but you still get the companionship that comes along with marriage. Cohabitation has become a normative part of the courtship process among american adults.
