Magic that"s out of the world/ super natural. Not really a specific period of time: if it"s old, it gives the story authority, vaguely medieval time gives it mystery. Brother grimms picked up the fairy tales from middle- class informants which made them feel a little more cynical and clean. Wanted to retain the appearance of rustic authenticity.
