Social psychology research (correlational: correlation is not cassation-- always have directional problem and potential confounds. Increases internal validity and external validity: control and random assignment are crucial for true experiments. Intrinsic motivation- originates in factors within a person (eat, sleep, sex) Extrinsic motivation- originates in factors outside a person (money: challenges existing theories. Social psychologist pay little attention to external validity. Lepper discovered the paradoxical effects of reward on intrinsic motivation overjustification effect: intrinsic motivation diminishes for activities that have become associated with reward/ extrinsic factors.
