Greek civilization is a maritime civilizationgreek speaking people colonized areas on the
coasts of Europe and Africa
The romans didn’t shut down greek civ in the time of alexander the great.
Sources about greek civ comes from written sourcesInscriptions (laws, decrees, official
documents, graffiti) and literary works (historical works or other genres, contemporary or later
than the events). There are biases with all written sources. Some information is lost because
those writing it may not have thought it was important.
Herodotus, Thucydides and Xenophon are the major sources on Athenian history.
Xenophon wrote about what happened after the war
Herodotus and Thucydides wanted to find why things happened.
The Athenians wrote on stone things that happened in the government because they wanted their
citizens to be informed about what was happening. Athens is a democracy and the citizens have a
say in the decisions so it is important that the citizens know what is happening in the
government.
Archaeological sources aren’t good at telling events that happened (life of people, political
events) but are good at telling about prosperity and the materials used.
Written sources show who was educated.

One of the most defining features of the Minoan civilization are palaces. The largest palace is the
Palace of Knossos. There is a central authority (kings) that make decisions on how to use the
resources.
In the Minoan civilization, they wrote on clay tablets in a language known as Linear A. For they
most part they spoke to each other and remembered facts however they wrote down things like
policies, and taxes.
There is a more complex form of writing known as Phaistos disc.
Only people who have a high level of education could use the disks and writing because it was
fairly difficult. Common people did not use them.
The language of Minoan is not Greek this is known because they don’t fit in the general family
of languages in which Greek is one. Minoans are no directly related to the Greek.
