Limits are natural (a valley, an island), cultural (a type of architects, style of pottery) or arbitrary (are you"re permitted to search) Help with conservation, help in understanding history of a territory or land use or economy, and to locate a possible excavation site. Pros: covers large area it short time, limited resources (cheap), non-destructive, can be repeated. Cons: quantity and quality of data depend on factors, tell little about a lot of sites. Unsystematic: walk around to find evidence with no path in mind.
