COGS 100 Study Guide - Final Guide: Model Theory, Mental Models, Mental Model
Document Summary
People are rational on paper, but fallible in reality. Three classes of theory of deduction: formal logic. Technically impossible, because humans are affected by the content of deduction: content-specific rules. Doesn"t take in the fact that people can make valid deductions based on logical propositions and rules of reasoning: mental models. Forms the basis of various kinds of modelling. Language can be interpreted differently based on the person"s perception: generate a message that will create your thoughts in the other person"s mind, sometimes there will be misinterpretations between the two. A mental model is a structure that represents something in the real world, which is then used in mental processes. Humans form mental models from semantic interpretations of statements what we hear and understand: therefore mental models depend on the language and communication. We pay more attention to whether the model makes sense or not, and not if it is logical.
