Document Summary

Chapter 1 : physical geography: tools in geography: Maps display and store spatial information, but have limitations they can never be up-to-date. Geographic information systems (gis) are databases that rely on computers for data analysis. Remote sensing is a technique in which planes or satellites provide images of earth"s surface. Mathematical remodelling helps us understand both natural and human phenomena in geography. Statistics provide methods to analyze geographic data to assess differences, trends, and patterns: physical geography is concerned with the natural world around us. Natural processes are constantly active, the earth"s environments are always dynamic and changing. Human activity is changing earth"s climate by adding to the greenhouse effect by burning fossil fuels. Biodiversity makes ecosystems stable & adaptations easier, & is beneficial (i. e. , more pesticides, drugs). Pollution (i. e. , hazardous gases, fertilizer runoff, toxic wastes) can degrade environmental quality. Local scale (i. e. , steep slope vs valley floor).
