Document Summary

The earth completes one rotation with respect to the sun every day, or once in 24 hours. Its rotation imposes a diurnal (daily) rhythm, influencing the temperature, humidity, and air motion. It rotation is also linked to the ocean currents and to the diurnal rise and fall of the ocean tides. Winds turn from the expected direction imposed by the pressure gradients. In the northern hemisphere, winds turn to the right; in the southern hemisphere, to the left: a geographic grid is a spherical coordinate system used to determine locations of features on earth"s surface. Parallels are true east-west lines, or lines of latitude. Meridians are true north-south lines, or lines of longitude, which converge at each pole. Longitudes: the prime meridian is at 0o (greenwich, england); the international date line is at 180o. Degrees of latitude and longitude are subdivided into minutes (1/60) and seconds (1/3600).
