Week 13: (cid:862)political/economic/social history -- what"s the dif? (cid:863) (january 11th ) We have looked at a lot of this kind of history. This term we will be looking at social history more in depth - partly because the professor is a social historian. The federal election of 1891 - the old flag, the old policy, the old leader - sir john a. Macdonald"s last election, he called in march 1891 because many of his party members had been caught in scandals: the scandals continued to spread and got larger. Macdonald was afraid that the corruption and allegations would reach the prime. The liberals lead by sir wilfred laurier (first moments on the political scene) Unrestricted reciprocity - also known as free trade. Sir wilfred laurier was campaigning on a platform of free trade with the united states. Macdonald felt that free trade would be the first steps of the united states taking over.
