Document Summary

Module i: world war i and the rise of the soviet. This course will not provide definitive answers to these questions. Historians themselves have debating the answers to the above questions for decades. There may never be definitive answers to these questions, nor should the debates ever stop. A distinguishing characteristic of history as a discipline is that many historians reject the idea that there is a single/correct answer to important questions that have been posed. There is commonly an agreeance on what happened and when, but understanding the reasons and causes of major historical events is a never-ending endeavour. Analytical uncertainty may not be attractive to those used to proving causality is often the first step towards validating a hypothesis. However, uncertainty helps maintain caution and a certain level of humility in the way we as historians deal with the past. Maybe not concerned with the answers themselves but at least the search for the answers.
