Base your analysis on the cases and texts discussed in class: limitations (deuteronomy 17:14-20), story of king. Limitations: the limitations placed on royal power were specific rules a king had to follow in order to keep their kingship. Not too many wives (many wives reflects various alliances, leads to war) Not too many horses (excessive amount of horses symbolizes military power which also leads to war - god didn"t want war) Placed himself above god and the prophets (tried to separate himself from the people) King must be jewish and from israel: god has a different standard to jews. To make sure king isn"t distracted from primary goal of leading the people (politically) Also can be seen as means to prevent the king in engaging with unnecessary things/ways. Helps enforce the hierarchy (god prophets king [who is also one of the people]) God is aiming to prevent the development of a supreme leader.
