Trapassato is the exact equivalent of the english past perfect (i had worked, they had left), expresses a past action that took place before another past action or point in time. Most recent past event may be expressed in the passato prossimo or the imperfetto. When you use had + a past participle in english, you should use the trapassato in italian: I nonni erano gi usciti quando ho telefonato my grandparents had already left when. Ero stanca perch avevo nuotato tutta la mattina i was tired because i had been swimming all morning. Quando mi sono svegliata, mia zia era partita when i woke up, my aunt had left. Avevo gi letto dieci libri quando avevo otto anni i had already read ten books by the time i was eight. Trapassato is formed with the imperfetto of the auxiliary verb (avere or essere) plus the past participle.
