Our concept: regulated by culture, who we are, past experiences, other experiences. If x is a sign, then it has a meaning. Code: we need to have an interpretive code (ie. italian = language, need a code to understand) Signifier(s) = what makes sense in our head: needs to be decoded (ie. cane = dog in italian) Cultural codes: regulates our lives and how we interpret the world and how we want to be interpreted by the world. Red: no relationship between sounds (signifiers) or letters (r-e-d) to the color, we just decided those noises and letters represent the color red. We tend to have a basic meaning, like primary color. Cultural meaning: we have decided that red also means stop: not universally recognized because it"s culturally based. We have conventionally agreed red means stop: communism = another cultural association with communists and left-wing, emotional transformation = someone turning red is interpreted as an expression of them being embarrassed/blushing.
