The goal of tort is to compensate someone for the harm they have received. This is a very different goal than the goal in criminal law which is designed to punish individuals and to deter socially unacceptable conduct. Civil law system of torts there is 6 jurors. In a tort case, the person bringing the claim, usually the accident victim, is called the plaintiff.
