Document Summary

The first attempts to refute hume by appealing to our knowledge of the laws of nature. The law in question is, of course, the law of gravity. It follows from this law that objects fall when dropped (in earthly conditions), and this phenomenon is just a particular instance of the general phenomenon of gravitational attraction that holds for all masses anywhere. Thus, my knowledge of this law is what justifies my prediction that the pen will fall because it justifies (and explains) the causal connection between letting go and falling. We formulate the law by making observations of objects under certain conditions. We produce hypotheses that describe the behaviour of the objects so far observed. We then make predictions about how objects will behave in future on the basis of those hypotheses and we test those predictions by further observations.
