Socrates encounters euthyphro outside the court of athens before his trial and her urges euthyphro to instruct/teach him what holiness is since it may help him in trial. Defines holiness: what is holy, is (=), what is approved of by all the gods (subjective) What all the gods love is pious and holy, and what they all hate is impious. Believes that this statement will stand the test of enquiry. First tries to show that being beloved is distinct from that which loves: speak of carrying and we speak of being carried/leading/seen and being led. It is in the state of being carried/led because it is carried/led. A thing is visible because it is seen, not because it is visible. Any state of action or passion implies previous action or passion.
