Week 14: developmental psychology i: physical and lifespan development. Germinal period- first two weeks after the sperm and egg unit. Lasts until developing cells attach to uterine wall 8-10 days after conception. Zygotic cell divides multiple times: cleavage- division of cells in the early embryo to form blastomeres, morula- solid mass of blastomeres resulting from a number of cleavages of zygote. Gamete- mature male or female cells used for reproduction (are haploid cells) Haploid- having one set of chromosomes instead of the usual complement of two. Gene restriction: methyl groups attach directly to genes turning them on or off, other groups attached to histones (dna is coiled around it ), tightening or loosening histones to turn a gene on or off. Stem cells-undifferentiated cells that can divide and produce any one of a variety of differentiated cells. Identical twins- when the morula splits into two parts, identical twins are formed.
