Empiricism: belief that people can describe the world through rules generated by observation, quantification, and the principle of parsimony (accepting the simplest testable solution that accounts for all available evidence) were becoming formalized as the scientific method. Rationalism: the pursuit of truth through reason and logic: explain structuralism and functionalism in relation to empiricism. Structuralism: emphasizes the elemental constituents of experience; if we can break down things into simpler parts and understand these, then the whole thing can be understood. Example: when perceiving an apple, a structuralist would say you received redness, roundness, sweetness and crunchiness; a functionalist would think about why we perceive apples. Verifiability: experiment can be replicated giving the same result. Publish your results and/or present them at a conference.
