Developing the skills of scholarship involves slowing down
There is no critique associated with the mindset list.
Generation X (early 1960s to 1981)
- Conflicted generation
- Born in the shadow of Boomers McJobs
o “low-pay, low-prestige, low-dignity, low-benefit, no-future job in the service
sector… considered a satisfying career choice by people who have never held
one”
- First influenced by the internet
- Well educated (43% BA), employed (85%), work hard in rewarding jobs
Millennials (1982-1995)
- Generation Y the Millennials
- The “found generation” – small, close families “most watched over generation”
- Optimists who trust and respect authority
- Rely on adult direction, assurance, confirmation (parental often)
- Time management a problem highly packed schedules “just do it”
o Parents drive them to extra curricular to ensure that they had an enriched
childhood to help them gain better experience and to get a better future.
- Sense of entitlement less self-critical
o Because their parents constantly gave them positive affirmation
- “used to receiving information really fast”
- Parallel process, multi-taskers
- Prefer graphics before text
- Prefer random access, perform best when networked
- Thrive on instant gratification and frequent rewards
Generation Z (1996-2010)
- Do a great deal of online communication
- Rely heavily on technology and cell phones
- Rarely spend much time outside unless it is for an organized activity
- Grow up under extreme pressure to succeed
- Greater independenceself reliant
- Mainstreamed, racially and ethnically diverse classes confident of abilities
