Document Summary

Email: 9rl31@queensu. ca: explain what giddens means by term discontinuities in relation to modernity (page 4). Discontinuities: history is developing is sections or chunks and not smoothly. There are different events happening that separate history into different social institutions. Giddens concludes that we do live in a post modern ears. Modernity took place in the 18th century and society is rapidly changing so we are moving to a new place where we can explain modernity. Everything moves so rapidly that we cant put labels onto things because as we mood forward we are able to move so quickly that by the time it is labelled we have already changed. Where development is linear society is not that way everything is confusing and reflexive. However important to note that some things have not changed at all and so this is not always the case, there is no overall direction.
