Displacement - humans having the ability to refer to past and future time, not solely talking about things present in the immediate environment. Displacement also allows humans to talk about things whose existence cannot be sure of. An exception = the bee dance - can be looked at as a form of displacement (but is very limited) Arbitrariness - the relationship between words and objects being described. Linguistic forms of words have no natural or iconic relationship with the objects. Productivity (aka creativity/open-endedness) - creating new expressions by manipulating language to describe new objects or situations. Animals cannot do this because they are limited in the number of ways they can communicate. This lack of productivity in animal communication is called fixed reference.
