There are two components of this course, lecture and lab. The lecture portion makes up 65% of
the grade and the lab portion is 35%.
Lecture (65%)
Midterm is worth 35% ( 22.75% of your total mark)
Final exam is worth 55% ( 35.75% of your total mark)
Quizzes are worth 10% (6.5 % of your total mark)

Quizzes/assignments will be done primarily through Mastering Chemistry so if
you haven’t already registered, registering should be your first priority.
Lab (35%)
Reports and assignments are 70% ( 24.5 % of your total grade)
Participation given by your TA is 10% (3.5% of your total grade)
Presentation during the last weeks of the lab are worth 10% (3.5% of your total grade)
Pre-lab quizzes are also worth 10% (3.5% of your total grade)
The Midterm date is tentatively set for March 7th 2018, any changes to the date will be
mentioned early in advance. All lecture quizzes are done on Mastering Chemistry.
Lecture format will be PowerPoint slides and will be available for download from the course
D2L site after each lecture(possibly subject to change)
Lab start dates
Jan 15th (Section 1-6)
Jan 22nd (Section 7-12)
You must pass both the lecture and lab components and you cannot miss more than 2 labs
How to prep for labs
Purchase the lab manual from Sherwood Copy & Print at 165 Dalhousie St
You must make a flow chart before every single lab or you will not be allowed into the
lab
There will be a pre-lab quiz before every lab
The schedule is available for viewing on D2L

Biochemistry is the study of the chemistry of living organisms
Biological molecules that make up cells are made up of building blocks and complex
molecules
The study of biomolecules
Structure and function
Interconversion
The process by which two things are each converted into the other, often
as the result of chemical or physical activity.
