Document Summary

The study of child development can be overwhelming. We organize discussions of development into: periods of development, domains of development. The study of child development breaks the early years into age groups or periods. These are: prenatal (from conception to birth) Infancy (0-19 months: toddlerhood (18 moths to 3 years, preschool (early childhood) (3-6 years, school age (6-11 years, adolescence (11-18 years) In our course, we will study children from the prenatal period to school age. The study of child development is broken into specific domains or aspects of the whole. There are three domains of development: physical/biological, socio/emotional, cognitive. The domains of development are intricately interwoven. Development in each domain influences and is influenced by the other domains of development. In this course, we take the view that psychomotor development involves the stimulation and cultivation of the physical domain results in the stimulation of the cognitive and socio-emotional domains.
