Spotlights from Chapters 1,2,3,7 & 11 Michael Kors - began designing at 19 - studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York - launched Michael Kors womenswear in 1981  30 years in 2011 - other lines: MICHAEL Michael Kors (lower), KORS Michael Kors (in between) - was a judge on Project Runway - views the fashion business as a hard-knock life and does not believe many up and coming designers will make it to 30 years Awards: 1999 CFDA Award for Womenswear Designer of the Year 2003 CFDA Award for Menswear Designer of the Year 2010 received the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award 2010 Honour for Cancer Awareness Betsey Johnson - started in 1978  30 years in 2008 - 70 stores, 800 wholesalecounts, 10 licensees - collecting her old pieces to create a vintage inspired line - she is obsessed with dance, costumes, the theatre which show through her designs - longtime business partner: Chantal Bacon until 2007 - her work has attracked style seeking celebrities Pierre Cardin - left home at 17; Italian immigrants parents in france - helped launch the “New Look” at the house of Christian Dior in 1947 - 2010 celebrated 60 years - opened his own house in Paris at 30 years old - wrote a book about his years as a designer - licenses for over 900 products in 140 countries - today has 180 00 workers in 70 countries - shuns advertising - runs various empires and plans new buildings, music festivals, art exhibitions, theater performance and even a golf course Donna Karan - 2010 marked 25 years of her label - originally started to design “modern clothes for modern women” - created “7 easy pieces” to be mixed and matched for a women’s wardrobe - many DKNY lines: DKNY for men, DKNY active etc - her passions: preserving culture, improving health and well being and empowering children - new line and direction: Urban Zen: focuses on her passions - first was inspired to help when AIDS epidemic broke out Tobé Reports - founded by Taube Coller Davis (newspaper columnist); changed her name to Tobé - established in 1927 - forecasted trends for department store chains - Abbey Donegar bought Tobé Reports in 2005 - He hired Catherine Moellering who updated it, put it on the web - Rivals: WGSN, Stylesight Lily Pulitzer - eloped with her husband to Florida  boredom lead her to start designing warm-weather wardrobe - in 1961, she opened her first store - Jackie Kennedy, who she went to school with, wore her clothing in Life Magazine - Expanded to men’s, children’s, swimwear etc but she only has ever done summerwear - Fashion began to have neutral tones etc, so she sold her business in the early 80s - Someone bought the brand after and now it makes $100 million annually - Quotes of other desingers saying good things – American resort classics, suitable for all ages etc Jason Wu - from Tawain - learned to sew by making dolls  st
