Just-in-ime, in a narrow sense, is a system of producion in which processing and movement of parts/modules/work-in-process occur just as they are needed, usually in small batches. Jit systems require very litle inventory because successive operaions are closely coordinated. Jit in a broad sense, also called lean producion, is a philosophy of eliminaing wastes, especially setup, lead imes, and inventories and coninuous improvement. The goals of jit/lean are a balanced rapid low, eliminaion of waste and disrupion, a lexible system , and coninuous improvement. The building blocks of a jit/lean system are various tools and methods used in product design, process design, personnel and organizaion, and planning and control. Products should be simple to make and assemble (dfm and dfa). Concurrent engineering and qfd should be used to ensure a fast product design process and that the voice of the customer is relected in the product"s quality. One unit is produced every takt (or cycle) ime to meet the demand.
