What is colour? the visible spectrum of light o! 1 nm is one billionth of a meter. Colour consists of a whole spectrum of light. Concept of good colour is highly subjective o! Different colours are affected by external factors differently o! Numerous factors that affect colours both temporarily or permanently. Understanding human vision helps us better understand colour. The retina contain photoreceptors, cone cells and rod cells o! Rods - responsible for vision in low light (but monochromatic, they do not detect colours) o! 2 degree angle is standard choice for graphic arts o! Assessment of colour to determine good or bad reproduction is highly subjective o! A colour that is numerically correct may be wrong do to surrounding circumstances. Metamersim (certain colours look different in certain lighting) can affect colour too. Colour of an object can match under one light source but not another o! Important to have standards for viewing colour in order to ensure consistent colour.
