It also explains something about what makes abstraction so interesting in the modern world. Written sources for minoan and mycenaean art are dif cult to nd, or the ones you do nd are ridiculously complex, convoluted and lled with information no normal human being would like to know. So here we go with very basic things. They were probably great sailors and that is why their major settlements were not forti ed (we think) because they could defend their territory by sea. We do not know this for a fact, but it makes sense. Minoan settlements or palaces were devastated by an earthquake around 1350 b. c we think. Minoan civilization stopped because of a horrendous natural disaster like an earthquake which the culture could not survive.
