The oppositional gaze (background info) - punishment for gazing: white-slave owners punished black people for looking. In turn, the slaves had an overwhelming desire to look. Because there is power in looking - creates a possibility for agency. Through film & tv, black people are finally allowed to. Look - with the use of television screens/dark theatres. The body of the black female is denied - the phallocentric spectatorship where the woman to be looked at and desired to be white: unable to find accurate representations of black women in the media. Focused around women in lm & representational media. Lens of media is curated for men: women are portrayed through the male gaze, ex. camera lingering on a woman"s body - sexual objects. 3 parts of the gaze: how men look at women, how women look at other women, how women see themselves.
