Pp: photography as art: stages of development of high. We"ve already considered the idea that photography developed as an answer to the drive for realism in high art forms, of painting, etc. So, of course, when it was invented it would naturally be put to use for the purpose of creating realistic high art images. And we"ve seen some examples of that: the first inventors made pictures that mimicked paintings: daguerre making. Still lifes; talbot making images after dutch genre painting. Art: to define art (not easy), perhaps we might say that art is expressive, of ideas, meaning, interpretations, stories, aesthetics. Since photography"s invention, all through the 19th c. and after, there were constant debates about whether or not it could be used for art.
