Hesi case 6: ms. barker acute pancreatitis. 50 year old woman on a medical unit with acute pancreatitis. Injury to pancreas or obstruction of pancreatic duct results in leakage of pancreatic enzymes into pancreatic tissue: enzymes break down pancreatic tissue causing . Inflammation causes loss of blood and plasma proteins to the retroperitoneal space and peritoneal cavity contributing to a decreased circulating fluid volume . Degree of inflammation varies from: mild edema, to severe hemorrhagic necrosis. Most common in middle aged men and women. Some pts. recovery completely; others have recurring attacks: chronic pancreatitis develops in some. Resolves spontaneously over several days, requiring only supportive care and treatment of the underlying cause . For some patients the illness is fulminant and severe, prolonged, with many complications. Abdominal distension b/c of intestinal hypomotility computed tomography: the size of the pancreas can be determined, necrosis, infection ( abscess or cysts) and hemorrhagic disease can be identified.
