Respiratory physiology: ventilation: process of moving gases into and out of the lungs. Inspiration and expiration: active process (lungs fill with air) stimulated by chemical receptors in the aorta and a passive process for expiration (lungs expel air) Pulmonary circulation: moves blood to and from the alveolar capillary membranes for gas exchange: oxygen transport: travel through lungs and cardiovascular system, diffusion: exchange of respiratory gasses in the alveoli and capillaries. Carbon dioxide transport: diffuses into the rbc and is hydrated into carbonic acid. Physiological factors: decreased oxygen-carrying capacity, decreased inspired oxygen concentration. Conditions affecting chest wall movement: pregnancy, obesity, musculoskeletal abnormalities, hypovolemia. Increased metabolic rate: neuromuscular diseases, central nervous system alterations, chronic disease. Ii: older adults *higher risk for impaired oxygenation d/t the slowing down of their bodily processes.
