Women of all ages should be familiar with their breasts and report any changes to their hcp. Women ages 50-59 should undergo mammography every 2 years. Mammography can identify breast abnormalities that may be cancer before physical symptoms appear. Nurses should teach women to get to know the whole area of breast tissue including up to the collarbone and under armpits. A method used to visualize the internal structure of the breast with the use of radiography. Can detect suspect findings that cannot be felt by palpation. Mammography allows for earlier treatment and prevention of metastasis lesions that that smaller or less aggressive b/c some tumours metastasize late. Younger women mammography is less sensitive b/c the breast tissue is more dense, and developing breast tissue is radiosensitive: digital mammography.
