Inferential statistics, which are based on the laws of probability, provide a means for drawing conclusions about a population, given data from a sample. When using a sample to estimate population characteristics, it is important to obtain a sample that is representative of the population. But, separate samples will likely be diferent even though they are taken from the same population. However, the sample means tend to approximate the population mean: samples are supposed to be representative of the population. Remember that when scores are normally distributed, 68% of the cases fall between. +1sd and -1sd from the mean: therefore, the probability is 68 out of 100 that any randomly drawn sample mean lies between +1sd and -1sd and so on. ^ the word error signi es that the sample means contain some error as estimates of the population mean.
