Document Summary

Law is a form of social control in the sense that it can be used to influence and change peoples" behaviours. There are some behaviours that society wishes to discourage for the greater good of all. Examples of such behaviours include murder, rape, robbery, and assault. Through legal instruments, perpetrators of these behaviours may be punished in order to discourage others from engaging in these harmful acts. Without the law in a society, a state of lawlessness, also known as a state of anarchy, would prevail. Through legal instruments, the government maintains public order by sanctioning wrong-doers who violate the law. The way we relate to each other in a democratic society is also influenced by law. If you breach the terms of an agreement or contract for example, the other party may sue you and you may be asked to pay damages to compensate for the loss suffered by the other party.
